The Number 14
Axis Theatre Company
The Number 14 is an award winning show featuring some of Canada's finest physical theatre performers in an action packed comic adventure that has wowed audiences around the world since its debut in 1992.
"Winningly, wild. A slap-happy ride. The performers go about their work with zest and talent" New York Times
The play is about a day in the life of the people boarding, riding and leaving a bus as it winds its way through a large city. En route the bus travels though many parts of the city, which influences the type of people climbing aboard. How the people react and the stories they have to tell make up the performance arc of the play.
"Delightful? dazzling, brilliant? astounding! This bus ride is so exhilarating that you don't really care where you get off" New York Daily News
Outrageous costumes, award winning masks and audacious comedic turns fuel this high-octane social satire. Six actors play over 30 characters - all humorous and mesmerizing reminders of those we see on the bus. The play is filled with acrobatics, songs, text, dance, funny gags, and some of the best mask work you will ever see - it's much like Mr. Bean and Monty Python all rolled into one with a heaping dose of Canadian humour and charm. The Number 14 earned a 1998 New York Drama Desk nomination in the Unique Theatrical Experience category. The production has also garnered four Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards, and a Dora Mavor Moore nomination. The Number 14 originated in Vancouver as the brainchild of founding Artistic Director Wayne Specht along with Roy Surette, currently the Artistic Director at the Centaur Theatre in Montreal.
